The Brisbane Showgrounds, home of the annual Ekka (Brisbane-dese for show), was flooded by local Christians for an evangelistic rally last weekend. At the end of the two-day rally, an announcement from the stage said that 1,000 people had been saved.
An array of Pentecostal churches joined by Baptists and Salvation Army congregations supported the rally in prayer across Australia, with speakers from each group on the stage. The rallies were accompanied by mass street evangelism, with some 3,000 reportedly taking part.
The main rally continued despite rain, with baptisms and worship. Videos of the event show the showground oval, but not the stands filled with people many in ponchos. A long list of speakers included Mark Varughese of Kingdom City Church, Wayne Alcorn, national president of Australian Christian Churches, Paris Olympics gold medalist Nicola Olyslagers, Israel Folau and US evangelist John Bevere.
The Other Cheek asked Matt Prater from Vision Radio, who attended the rally, what the best part of it was for him. “Seeing people sharing their faith on the streets and seeing people come to Christ on the streets was my highlight!” As for speakers, he replied, “John Bevere’s message about the awe of God was powerful!”
