The gender pay gap for 7800 Australian businesses have been released, including details of how some Christian organisations perform. The Employer Gender Pay Gaps report 2023-24 shows that on average Australian women earn $28,425 less than men. The report allows you to look up the pay gaps for any organisation in their survey, and determine if they meet the target band of -5 percent to +5 percent.
The gender pay gap is the difference between the average or median remuneration of men and the average or median remuneration of women, expressed as a percentage of men’s remuneration.
Half of employers have an average total remuneration gender pay gap larger than 12.1 per cent. Only 15.3% pof employers have a pay gap within the target range.
The Network of Anglicares represent some of the largest Christian employers. here’s how some of them went – remember you can look up more organisations yourself. We’ll use the measure of average total renumeration to calculate the pay gap. (The report also provides other measures.)
• Anglicare Sydney (Anglican Community Services) has 6293 employees: gender pay gap 10.2 per cent
• Anglicare Victoria has 2468 employees: gender pay gap -3.5 per cent (women are ahead)
• Anglicare. SA has 1,999 employees: gender pay gap is 7.1 per cent.
Another large welfare agency is Mission Australia with 2473 empoyees and a gender pay gap of 7.2 per cent.
The Salvation Army corporate report shows 9555 employees and a pay gap of 5.2 per cent.
Baptistcare NSW and ACT with 4719 employees had a higher pay gap of 9.3 per cent
Uniting (NSW,ACT) possibly the largests religious welfare organisation with 10617 employeees had a gender pay gap of 6.4 per cent.
Individual Christian or Church schools show up differences. Here are some examples:
• St Peters (an elite school in Adelaide) has an interesting profile: 488 employees and a gender pay gap of 1.9 per cent, with athe altyernative measure of the pay gap in median total renumeration having a – 4.9 per cent result.
• An intriguing result from the N SW Presbyterian Property Trust whose corporate report includes Scots College and the Presbyterian Ladies College, Sydney with1762 employees and a pay gap of 0.7 per cent – and a workforce of almost equal gender balance.
• Covenant Christian School a member of Christian Education Natioanal with 256 employees gets a reverse result to St Peters. Their gender pay gap is 9.1 per cent with the alternate result of the pay gap in median total renumeration blowing out to 12.8 per cent.
• Citipointe college in Brisbane with 394 empoyees had a pay gap of 4.2 per cent which blew out to 12.5 per cent for the median calculation.
The two low fee schools have a workforce numerically dominated by women. However, the figures suggest they have a smaller cohort of men that are more highly paid.
