Dorothy Lee, the Stewart Research Professor of New Testament at Trinity College Melbourne, a college of the University of Divinity, has become a member of the Order of Australia in the January 26 honours list.
Her citation reads, “For significant service to the Anglican Church of Australia.”
Dorothy Lee, a priest of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne is associated with at St Mary’s North Melbourne which describes it’s worship as “relaxed Anglo-Catholic.”
Her service to the church nationally includes membership of the Doctrine Commission of the Anglican Church of Australia, one of the key committees of the General Synod (church parliament). Lee is also a canon of St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne.
Lee’s special focus on the Gospel of John is reflected in her extensive publications list which includes the forthcoming John in the Zondervan series New Word Biblical Themes, and the chapter “Symbolism and ‘Signs’ in the Fourth Gospel” in the Oxford University Press Handbook of Johannine Studies.
Professor Lee has also published on the role of women in the New Testament and in today’s church including her 2021 book The Ministry of Women in the New Testament: Reclaiming the Biblical Vision for Church Leadership published by Baker Academic.
Asked “What do you think it means to be a good person?” by the Univsity of Divinity magazine Vox, Lees responded, “For me, being a good person means living a life of humility and love before the face of God: knowing how needy we are and connecting with others in self-giving service.”
