Might, right and Doug Wilson

Might and right: Fleming Rutledge- writer of a great book The Crucifixion, tels Christianity Today the one lesson from the gospel is the worldly might is not right.

“ I’ve noticed that a number of people, most famously Tom Holland, have written about how until the rise of Christianity, it was the law of the jungle everywhere: The powerful dominate and the weak fare as they must. We’ve just heard recently from a presidential adviser, Stephen Miller, describing there’s only been one rule: the law of the jungle. No mention of the fact that before Jesus Christ’s preaching and teaching, his death and resurrection, and the subsequent transformation of Western civilization, we didn’t know anything else. The Roman Empire did not know anything about mercy to the poor. ”

Parra cares: Eagle-eyed Queensland pastor Matt Prater spotted a good effort by Parramatta City Council. Obadiah is currently in Sydney’s second CBD in an offspring’s townhouse doing the retired bloke thing awaiting a whitegoods deliver. He will check out the street posters when he has done his chore of installing a dishwasher!

A sin of ommission (apparently): Obadiah wrote about a NCO in the US forces reporting that his commander stated that the war in Iran was the start of armageddon last week. In passing I mentioned conservative pastor Doug Wilson’s unconventional ideas about voting. I quickly summarised it as taking the view that women should not vote. Obadiah was accused of telling “an untruth about a brother”.

The detail of Wilson’s plan is for “household voting” where the vote is contriolled by the man in a house, not the women, which leaves women-only household still going to vote. But there would be less of them if the Supreme Court overturned Obergefell the case that ruled in favour of same sex marriage , as Wilson wishes.

The truth is that Wilson wants nearly all women not to have a vote.

My commenter seemed to be more concerned for Wilson’s words being exactly quoted than women losing the vote.

Maybe it is worth noting that the women who lose the vote would mostly include those who live in a family home with a man they are married to, or in a long term relationship with. That cohort includes those women who live the sorts of lives that Wilson commends. They would lose the vote the day they marry and get it back should they be widowed.

Arguably the conservative Christian vote would go down if every Wilson got his way.
