The ABC opens voting for the top books of the 21st Century: who will you vote for

Voting for the ABC’s top 100 books of this century opened today. Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead (2004) and Tom Holland’s Dominion (2019) are already on the list of books that you can browse here. What book will you vote for? What book would you add to the list?

There will be books that you have read for pleasure, maybe Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (2003), Mick Herron’s Slow Horses (2010), Rick Morton’s One Hundred Years of Dirt (2018) or Helen Garner’s The Season (2024).

And perhaps we should caution you that the authors are listed by first name. That’s a little irritating.

Who is missing? The “evangelical catholic” Henri Nouwen, the US Baptist Rick Warren, and theologian Don Carson, for starters. Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life may or may not be a favourite but it has sold over 50 million copies since it was published in 2002.

But Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code (2003) is there.

But the good news is that you can write in extra books to the list. Why not go for it!
