The church is like a doughnut – but we can save the city centre

Scots' church Melbourne

Phil Campbell, now senior Minister at Scots’ church in the centre of Melbourne, believes that the hole in the doughnut can be filled.

The Scots’ Church is a grand old church at the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, with a prime location in what they once called “The Golden Mile.” As they say in the real estate business, “Location, Location.” But that was before the world’s longest lockdown.

CBD office occupancy now hovers at around 39%, and except for Friday nights, the streets are ominously quiet.

Of course, the challenges facing a church like Scots’ come from long before Covid. Sadly, over time, it’s a church that’s lost touch with a generation of families and kids.

Okay, let’s be honest. Two generations maybe. Recently – recognising the scale of the challenge – the leadership of Scots’ Church has embarked on a mission to revitalise ministry across all generations. And that’s going to start, God willing, with children and families.

Scots’ has always been a “destination church” – if you’re keen on a world-class choir and a fine Rieger Orgelbau pipe organ, you’ll drive for an hour in any direction. Music Director Douglas Lawrence is widely renowned.

But new senior Minister Phil Campbell asked a question. “Why can’t we also become a destination church for fantastic kids and family ministry, geared to growing followers of Jesus in the next generation?” That’s why Scots’ Church is recruiting.

“We’re looking for someone with a missional heart and entrepreneurial vision to help turn the situation around, creating dynamic and gospel-centred kids and family ministries, and helping us rethink ways to reach and teach kids,” says Phil. “We’re advertising right now, and we’d love to hear from anyone with that kind of passion.”
