Scots’ Publicity: Obadiah was truly impressed with the handout at Scot’s Church in Collins Street Melbourne. It is called “The Leaflet” but they have that wrong. It is, argually, a magazine. But the title has been cemented by history, Scots has been pumping out The Leaflet since 1902, and they ain’t going to change it now. They are Presbyterian after all!
The Autumn issue which Obadiah picked up has a really good conversion story of disillusioned atheist Ashley Gardiner wandering into Scots, because a “non-religious” space at St Michaels acrid the road was shut, and finding, not straight away, but slowly, Jesus. The ex-journo says he is a different person: “I now feel that every decision I make , every action I take, is being guided by something external to me. And that is incredibly liberating.”
Gardiner now volunteers at Scots’ Flemington Mission, (Officially the Presbyterian and Scots Church Joint Mission), also featured in The Leaflet, which provides food parcels to healthcare support, that means members of the community can live with dignity.
As a visitor, Obadiah found the combination of strong evangelical preaching and community service very appealing.
And to round out the 48 pages, a reprint of a Barney Zwartz piece in the Sunday Age, which would have been welll worth a second read.
What a wonderful magazine to give away, and a great evangelistic tool for a city church, which gets a flow of visitors.
And there’s a cute Facebook invite from Scots.
