You are what you listen to

listening ears

Adelaide reader Ben White brings a devotional.

So I read this Scripture and it made me give consideration to the idea of what we allow ourselves to dwell upon or focus on is probably a lot more important than we realise, Phillipians 4:8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

I look at the things that I devote my spare time to, I like to listen to KISS, but should I then be surprised if listening to songs that are primarily about sex doesn’t then make the listener dwell on that?

If I put in time listening to Morrissey, another favourite artist of mine, should I be surprised when I experience thought patterns around depression and sadness?

I’m becoming a lot more conscious of the things that I dwell on and put my time into. Paul above tells me what I should be dwelling upon. I think it’s important to look at how we might listen to Christian music and Christian podcasts and media where the focus is to dwell upon Jesus and the Gospel and the things of God. It’s a strong challenge but its one that I am ready to accept today!
